plugs?
this might have been posted up here before but what type of plugs do the speakers use in the unit. Like are their just separate wires or are they like audio plugs for a tv?

Can you be more specific? Are you asking about the end that plugs into the radio, or the end that connects to the speakers? They both have connectors on them. The radio side has one or two big connectors with all kinds of wires ran into it. The speaker side has a male and female part to them.

the side that plugs into the radio. do all system have the same type of plug?

To tell you the honest to God truth, I'm not exactly sure. I do know that the HU's with the subwoofer has an extra connection to them. (for the sub) And if you bought the OEM sub, you will need the wire harness for the sub, plus the HU to make it connect up. As for the Power and such, I would say there is a good possibility that they will match. I do know that if the unit didn't come out of the same vehicle (ST-ST, F150-F150, etc) you may run into problems. I changed my dad's F150's cassette deck to a cd/cassette deck (exactly like mine in the ST) and we had to get an aftermarket adapter to get it to hook up. Best way is just to check what you are looking into changing it to, to what you have back there.

Check a site like Crutchfield, Metra, or Scosche. Chances are, the ST shares radio harness with many other Ford vehicles. It gets a little more tricky of you have Audiophile or "Premium Sound" (factory amps). Some aftermarket radios do not play well with factory amps (at least it didn't in my 2Gen Explorer).

Man, I feel bad...I did take a bunch of pictures of how to wire in an aftermarket headunit but I can't for the life of me find them.

So...lets give this a try. (yes, I'm using someone elses pictures until I can fine my own...if I can find my own.)

Here is the back of your radio. Unplug the factory harness.

Next, get a wiring harness from autoparts store of your choice. I'm pretty sure Scorch is the ONLY one that are sold lol. Anyway the part number for the one you want AT-WHFD3 (double check when you get there just to be sure and ask the guy/girl if you can bring it back if it doesn't work/fit).

The next step is pretty simple. Plug the factory harness into the aftermarket.

This guy ziptied them together...I've never seen them come apart, but whatever. To each their own. Maybe he's going to do some off roading or something....

But then its pretty simple. You're going to have 11 (give or take) wires left to deal with.

white/white-bk
green/green-bk
gray/gray-bk
purple/purple-bk

yellow (+)
red (+)
black (-)

Blue (remote on - amp, power antenna, ext)
orange (dimmer which I've never seen work on an aftermarket HU)

You can connect these the best way you know how. Some like heatshrink, some are ok with the 'twist/fold/electrical tape'

The harness that came with the aftermarket HU will have all the same color wires. So the cool part about this is, you can wire the two harnesses in the house so you're not doing it in the truck. That way when you do go outside, you're down in 5 minutes...give or take lol.

I'd like to get my hands on one of those just to check that out. My last car had a factory installed amp. It was one of the easiest installs I've done lol. But, I have no idea what the audiophile set up is like from ford.
