So I take it this is your first time doing it by yourself? So you broke your cherry? Congrats!!!!! It's always a nice feeling to be able to do things like this for yourself and not have to pay someone to do it. Again, congrats. Before you know it, you'll be wanting to rip the engine out and overhaul it.

The strongest "orange citrus" cleaner you can find.

As long as you didn't do something like this guy from the new VW commercial...

I've heard that kitty litter also works well.

Congrats on your first change. I always do mine (unless I have a free dealer change) -- but it's not my favorite thing to do. The filter on the 4.6 is somewhat of a pain to get to. I never could get the factory, gorilla-applied one off. Luckily, I had a free oil change at the dealer.

how many of yall use fully synthetic oil?

stonemiser- 05-19-2009

I have some in right now. I either use Syn Blend or Full Syn. Just my preference. The best milage I got was when I used Pensoil Platnum. Thta will be what I put in the next time I change.

MC is an excellent oil for a blend -- or any of the other Conoco-Phillips brands. Pennzoil Platinum is my choice for synthetic. I currently have PP, Mobile 1 0w20, and Castrol Syntec on hand. I will put in PP next.

I agree with Korey about MC (Motorcraft) blend. It's what I used when I was putting blend in. Walmart carries it and for a good price. Just don't use the 5w20. It isn't recommended for the 4.0's.

korey08XLT- 05-19-2009

^ Ahh -- true -- forgot about you 4.0 owners. About every other Ford used 5w20.

nobouncecap- 05-19-2009

i believe i put in 5w30

stonemiser- 05-19-2009

With the 4.0, always keep it at 5W30. You can adjust for winter, but I don't and I live in Pa. Gets cold here, but I keep it at 5W30.

I've always put kitty litter down after my parents left a...'bit' of oil in my driveway. Just a little mound, enough to cover the spot and walk away. You'd never know the Exxon Valdez was parked in my driveway.

So far I've been lucky with changing my oil at home. Granted, I've not done and oil change in my ST yet, but I did most of the ones on my '00 eclipse GT and I never really got more than a couple drops on the driveway. But I did flatten out a big cardboard box and laid that down THEN did the work.
